Hair is conditioned by the natural oils found in the sebaceous glands near the hair follicle. African American and curly hair is sometimes dry because it's harder for these natural oils to spread throughout the hair.
If you were to look at one hair under a microscope, you'd see that hair has two layers.
The Cortex, the inner core of hair.
The Cuticle, the Keratin protein that surrounds hair.
